Djelkhir vs Melian II announced after a brilliant night for the Bantamweights in Paris

Paris, France was the location for the last “Matches for Championships” stage of AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) where the two Bantamweight (56 kg) title challengers were crowned.

The first fight of the evening was an exhibition bout, as Turkey’s Selcuk Eker defeated Kenya’s Benson Njangiru on points, with one judge scoring the contest a draw, and the other two seeing the fight 58:56 to Eker, who won the first three rounds comfortably before a fightback from the Kenyan.

Azerbaijan’s Javid Chalabiyev then beat  Yoni Blanco (VEN) comfortably, winning the contest by dropping just two rounds throughout the course of the fight.

In the first bout to determine an APB title challenger, Argentine Alberto Melian maintained his undefeated record in the competition with a close win over China’s Jiawei Zhang.

Melian came out of the blocks much quicker than his Asia opponent, winning the first four rounds on all scorecards despite the efforts of Zhang.

China’s star did not give up however, and took the last two rounds in impressive fashion, but it was not enough to defeat Melian, who can only gain even more confidence after yet another APB victory.

Hometown hero and Olympic silver medalist Khedafi Djelkhir used the experience of his 16 undefeated professional contests as he dominated Brazil’s Robenilson Vieira De Jesus to set up a rematch with Alberto Melian in the Bantamweight title match.

Djelkhir was the man the fans came to see, and he did not disappoint, with his power the crucial difference between the two fighters. The French star caused a standing eight count to his rival in the last round, and the judges had him winning widely, 60:52. 60:53 and 60:54.

His win sets up a mouthwatering return match with Melian who outpointed Djelkhir in Argentina back in November.
