World Olympic Qualification Event in Baku sees five APB boxers earn Rio 2016 quota places

The World Olympic Qualification Event in Baku, Azerbaijan, saw 39 Rio 2016 quota places available at the ten Olympic weight classes, and AIBA Pro Boxers earned five of them thanks to two silver medals and two bronze, while Hakan Erseker secured his team’s first-ever Olympic Boxing place in the lightweight (60kg) competition.

Mongolia’s youngest team member, 19-year-old Tsendbaatar Erdenebat, reached the bantamweight (56kg) final against Ukraine’s Mykola Butsenko to qualify for Rio, while Germany’s in-form APB light heavyweight (81kg) boxer Serge Michel put together an excellent run in Baku to reach the final and take home the silver medal and a quota place for his team.

Selcuk Eker’s decision to move back to his original flyweight (52kg) class has proven a big success, with the Turkish boxer winning bronze and a Rio 2016 place along with Indian middleweight (75kg) Vikas Krishan Yadav. The Qatar APB boxer Hakan Erseker then earned his country’s first Olympic boxing quota place after his lightweight (60kg) quarter-final opponent Enrico la Cruz won the gold.
