AIBA Class

Stance: Southpaw

Career Highlight: Gold Medallist – AIBA World Boxing Championships, Almaty 2013

Birzhan Zhakypov has gathered a wealth of experience which he can call on in the APB, having boxed the biggest and best names in the 49kg category in a range of international competitions.

After winning bronze in the World Championships in 2005 and silver at the Asian Games in 2010, the Kazakh finally won a major title on home soil by claiming gold at the Almaty 2013 World Championships.

Zakhypov has a tendency to carry his hands low without the presence of a guard, instead relying on pendulum-like head movement and perfectly placed footwork to avoid danger.

He normally has his knees bent in a low, wide stance that gives him leverage to merely touch an opponent with a probing jab to the body or head before flitting away from counter punches and then back in to range to attack with shots to his opponent’s exposed areas.

Zhakhypov has fought under the colors of his country in two successive Olympic Games in Beijing 2008 and London 2012, and the hunger and perseverance he possesses will certainly ensure he will stop at nothing in search of APB victory.
